Porcelain Veneers

If chipped or uneven teeth mar your sophisticated image, we can help. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Marc Whitmore works with a master ceramist to provide his patients dazzling porcelain veneers.

Instead of mass-produced porcelain veneers made at a large, impersonal dental laboratory, such as is done with Lumineers, Dr. Whitmore believes that his image-conscious patients deserve the highest quality work possible. You won’t find a cookie-cutter mentality at our practice. Your smile makeover consultation will begin with a comprehensive exam of your existing dentition to be sure that you are a candidate for the procedure. Then Dr. Whitmore will take measurements of your teeth and facial structure. He will carefully note your skin tone, the tilt of your eyes, and the angle of your jawbone so that he can design veneers to enhance your unique appearance. And your new smile will be gorgeous.

While you await your new porcelain veneers, you can enjoy a provisional new smile made with a durable but temporary material. This provisional smile will be made to your specifications, with the shape and color that best enhance your appearance. We will adjust the new smile until you love how it looks, and then we will have the laboratory make your new porcelain veneers to match.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin wafers of porcelain, about the thickness of a fingernail, that can be bonded to your front teeth in order to totally transform your smile. They are handcrafted and custom shaded to blend with your existing teeth. And since they are made from porcelain, they are extremely durable, resisting stains even better than your natural teeth. They are also beautiful, matching tooth structure in translucency, color, and texture. Not only will they transform your smile, they may even change your life!

Porcelain veneers are used to mask stained, chipped, worn, or cracked teeth. They can also make your teeth appear larger or smaller, can close gaps, and can correct mis-aligned teeth without the use of braces. A smile makeover with porcelain veneers will give you increased confidence and they have been shown to bring people greater success. You deserve the smile of your dreams, and porcelain veneers can give it to you!

Why should you choose porcelain veneers? By giving you a whiter, straighter, and more aesthetic smile, you can appear years younger and can experience a boost in self confidence.

Porcelain veneers compared with other methods for transforming your smile:

- Porcelain crowns can also transform your smile, but they require aggressive tooth reduction. Porcelain veneers only require a minor shaving of the fronts of your teeth, removing about the thickness of a fingernail. - Dental bonding can also transform your smile, but it isn't nearly as durable as porcelain. Within a few years it will begin to deteriorate and stain and will become noticeable.

-  If your problem is crooked teeth, braces can be a solution. However braces take much longer. If you do want to have braces to fix your crooked teeth, we recommend Invisalign invisible braces, because most treatments can be completed in only one year, and they are much, much more comfortable than traditional wire-and-bracket braces.

-  Because porcelain veneers are so thin and they allow light to diffuse through from the underlying natural tooth structure, they look completely natural.

How are porcelain veneers made?

Dr. Whitmore starts with an esthetic evaluation, using computer imaging to help you decide the smile style that you want and that will work best for you. If you'd like, you may want to bring photos of smile styles that appeal to you. Once you and Dr. Whitmore determine the smile design that works best for you, and you cover all the other details of the diagnosis and treatment planning, the work will begin. While it is possible to place porcelain veneers without preparing the teeth ahead of time, most of the time, patients prefer having Dr. Whitmore prepare the teeth, because otherwise they will end up looking a little bulky and longer than your original teeth. After the teeth are prepared, he will place provisional veneers, made to look the shape and size of the smile design you want. You will wear that for maybe about a week to make sure that you like the smile design. Once you confirm that this is what you want, he will make a copy of the smile design to send to the master ceramist to have the porcelain veneers made.

It is this provisional veneer step that distinguishes our office from many others that do smile makeovers. We have the guaranteed gorgeous smile. We make absolutely sure that you will love your new smile before it is bonded on. We have heard too many sad stories of patients who never got a good look at their new smile until it was permanently cemented, and then they couldn't do anything about it. That will never happen in our office.

After the porcelain veneers are made, you will have another appointment to bond them on. You will get another chance, at this point, to get one more good look at them to be sure the smile design and color and everything else are what you want.

Are there any drawbacks to having porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers can last for many years if they are placed properly and properly cared for and maintained. There are some areas where you need to be careful if you have them.

- It isn't a good idea to chew exceptionally hard substances, like ice or metal objects. Fingernail biting also isn't a good idea.

-  Proper oral hygiene and six-month cleanings become more important once you've invested this much in your smile, so remember to keep that up.

- And avoid frequent snacking, as this can lead to decay on the parts of your teeth that aren't covered with porcelain veneers. This decay can grow to undermine the restoration and make it so that it may have to be re-done.

Dr. Whitmore serves porcelain veneers patients in Plano, Richardson, Addison, Carrollton, and North Dallas Texas.
