Your biannual appointment with Dr. Whitmore includes more than cleaning your teeth, and making sure your smile remains beautiful and your bite function is where it should be. Your check up also includes screening for oral cancer.
Since April is Oral Cancer Awareness month, we want to remind you of the importance of being aware of any changes in your mouth or on your tongue. Changes can include lumps or sores in your mouth, or red or white spots that don’t go away.
This type of cancer can be treated successfully when caught early, which is why it is included as part of your biannual appointment. Dr. Whitmore will check all soft tissue in your mouth and on your tongue, as well as head and neck.
Fifty thousand cases of oral cancer are diagnosed every year. Those who are at risk of being positively diagnosed may have one of the following risk factors:
- Drink alcohol
- Use tobacco
- Have human papilloma virus
- A diet low in fruit and vegetables
Men are more likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer than women.
Because early detection is the key to successfully treating oral cancer, screening for this disease is part of a biannual dental check up in more and more places. Dentists are trained to look for suspect areas, and technology is very good at finding lesions. Fast detection saves lives.
We care deeply about your health. While we want you to have a beautiful smile, we want you to stay healthy. By screening for oral cancer, we can help keep you healthy for a long time.
