Answers and help for TMD, TMD-related tinnitus and more
Research suggests that more than 10 million Americans suffer from temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMD), according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Many patients in the greater Dallas/Plano area seek out Whitmore Dental because of our expertise in providing care for TMD.
The temporomandibular joints are located on each side of your head and control the movements of your lower jaw. Because the joint operates like a hinge, it’s one of the most complicated in the body. People with TMD experience pain in the face, jaw or neck, jaw muscle stiffness and locking or popping, and a change in the way their upper and lower teeth fit together.
In addition to jaw pain and other discomfort, some patients with TMD also experience tinnitus, a distracting ringing in the ears.
Many of our patients have visited numerous specialists in an effort to find relief from TMJ or from reoccurring headaches. Questions we typically hear include “Can you help me? I’ve tried everything” and “Are you sure this can work?”
Our goal is provide thoughtful, thorough diagnosis to determine if bite issues are contributing to a patient’s discomfort.
Addressing issues with the bite can also provide relief to patients who experience reoccurring headaches. According to the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, an estimated 80 percent of headaches occur from muscle tension, and bite problems. For many of our patients, a lightbulb goes on when they see the interrelated nature of their bite problems, headaches and/or TMD.
Technology makes a difference
Our new Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) scanner provides three-dimensional images that can clearly show any abnormalities related to the jaw, and we also use a T-Scan® to measure any problems with an individual’s bite—how your upper and lower teeth work together. A T-Scan is a small, handheld device that painlessly scans your whole oral cavity, enabling Dr. Whitmore to identify any problems with your bite. We will share our findings with you, and if a dental cause is leading to your TMJ and/or headaches, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan.
Some of our patients have been living with pain for many years, and searching for answers. We are able to provide information, answers and a recommended course of treatment.
