Getting ready to attend a holiday party? Follow these tips to benefit your health (and your teeth).
Bring a healthy dish
Fruit or veggie tray or salad. Firm, crunch fresh fruits and vegetables are health allies. They are full of vitamins, and their high levels of fiber and water are filling. Plus, that high water content stimulates your saliva production. Not only will your breath stay fresher during the party, you’ll also benefit the chemical balance of your mouth and combat tooth-damaging acids (such as those in red wine, citrus-based drinks, sodas and other beverages).
Strawberry bowl. Strawberries are a perfect holiday color and full of vitamin C, and they have a little-known dental benefit. They contain malic acid, a natural whitener for teeth.
Cheese platter. Cheese contains casein, a protein that includes calcium and builds tooth enamel. Since many cheeses are higher-fat, consider smaller pieces combined with sliced veggies or fruit. This article from Prevention magazine highlights best-tasting lower-fat cheeses. Goat cheese and feta are both naturally lower in fat.
Carry a water bottle
Bring your own water bottle, and you’ll have an easy way to protect your teeth from wine stains. Water also helps cleanse your teeth from acids (see above) and sweets. Plus, you’ll avoid hydrating with drinks that are full of empty calories and destructive acids (like sodas or sweetened bottled water).
Did you know that tap water has a great pH balance (balance of alkaline and acid)? Plus, it contains fluoride which benefits your teeth. Fill your own bottle rather than spending money on bottled water.
Stash a mini-toothbrush and toothpaste and/or floss in your pocket or purse
Keep your smile looking flawless during the gathering—and protect the health of your teeth. What’s more, the minty taste of toothpaste will freshen your breath and discourage you from eating more than you’d planned.
If you’re hosting, consider the tips above as you plan your meal or party. Dental supplies (such as floss, floss picks, or wine wipes) are a considerate addition to your guest bath.
Enjoy the festivities—with a big, confident smile!
