I was wondering on average how many porcelain veneers I will need to make my teeth whiter? I want my whole smile to be much whiter.

This is difficult to estimate because the number of porcelain veneers used during a smile makeover varies. Every patient is different so it is recommended that you meet with a cosmetic dentist that knows what he/she is doing. This kind of cosmetic procedure requires true artistic ability so make sure you carefully research the dentist.
I would pose your same question to a cosmetic dentist that you are considering. For example, when they tell you how many veneers they typically use, that will tell you a lot about their experience level. For example, if a dentist only wants to do six veneers for a person that wants their teeth dramatically whitened, this is probably not the dentist for you.
If there is only a subtle color change from your existing teeth to the new veneers, you may be able to get away with doing six or sometimes even four veneers since your canine teeth tend to be a bit darker.
Although, when there is a noticeable color change you will need at least eight porcelain veneers to make an impact and sometimes as many as twelve. Make sure they take every viewing angle of your face into consideration. However, a good rule of thumb to go by is as many teeth show when you naturally smile, that is how far you typically want to extend the veneers.
The bottom teeth are usually a little bit darker than the uppers. But, with a normal bite they are often covered by your upper teeth anyway. This means that naturally there will be some shadows. If your smile shows off your bottom teeth too, you may need veneers on the bottom as well.
If you are looking to reduce the number of veneers used, than you can consider professional teeth whitening. Bleaching can be done before you get the veneers. You can combine the bleaching with the veneers to save money by whitening the back teeth or even bleaching the lowers and just placing veneers on the top, front teeth.
A good cosmetic dentist will be able to present you with many options to fit your specific situation and give you a dazzling white smile you will be proud to show off.
