Insights from Rachel, Whitmore Dental Patient Care Coordinator
We often hear the following from patients:
“I know I should brush my teeth at work, but I can’t find the time.”
Sure, it’s a smart idea to bring a toothbrush and floss to work, and to use them. There are many other quick and easy ways to keep your teeth healthy during the work day.
The chemistry within your mouth can contribute to cavities—or prevent them. Maintaining a healthy chemical balance in your mouth is easier than you think.
Tips for your workday
Avoid drinks with sugar and acid (such as sodas and fruit juices). If you drink coffee at work, don’t sip it throughout the day. Be a gulper, not a sipper. Rinse your mouth with water after you drink coffee. Drinking water throughout the day is also beneficial.
When you snack at work, avoid sugary and starchy processed food, such as those items made from white sugar and white flour. Cheeses and popcorn are more neutral for your mouth, and fresh fruits and vegetables are good choices too.
After a snack, if you don’t have time to brush, chew a piece of sugarless gum for 2-3 minutes. I recommend gum containing xylitol, a natural sweetener that is also a safe alternative to sugar for diabetics.
Xylitol-based gum will increase your salivary flow and naturally cleanse your mouth. I recommend using xylitol gum or rinses about five times a day, in order to keep the chemistry in your mouth as neutral as possible.
Remember the 2×2 rule for brushing
In terms of tooth-brushing, brushing your teeth after lunch is a great step. Overall, I would rather have a patient brush his or her teeth for a full two minutes, twice a day, than brush many times a day for 10 seconds.
Try these tips, and you’ll have fresher breath, while maintaining the health and beauty of your smile throughout the work day.
