With Valentine’s Day approaching, many of us are thinking more about our smiles.
Whether we’re single and ready to make a fabulous first impression, or looking forward to a special evening out with a loved one, our smiles matter. At Whitmore Dental, we’re dedicated to helping our patients have healthy, great-looking smiles.
Restorative dentistry restores the health of your mouth, so that your teeth are healthy, attractive and functioning well. Dr. Whitmore has received advanced training and continuing education in restorative dentistry.
We provide our patients with restorative dentistry options including fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and dentures. Let’s take a closer look at how crowns and bridges can benefit the health of your smile.
Crowns provide new structure, strength and protection to a tooth in trouble. We often use them to:
• Replace a large filling, when there isn’t enough tooth left to provide support
• Protect a weak tooth from fracturing, or restore a broken tooth
• Cover a badly discolored or poorly-shaped tooth, or one that has received a root canal
Crowns are available in a variety of materials, and can be matched to the color of your teeth.
If a patient has one or more missing teeth, bridges are a very helpful solution. A traditional bridge includes two or more crowns for teeth on either side of the gap. These anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth.
In between, we place false teeth called pontics, which are usually made from porcelain. Bridges are cemented to the anchoring teeth, although occasionally implants may be needed for this purpose.
Bridges have made a positive difference for so many of our patients. With a bridge, you’ll be able to effortlessly chew food. If you’ve been hiding your smile, those days will be over!
What’s more, having a bridge in place benefits the long-term health of all your teeth. Bridges are especially helpful for our patients who may have suffered jaw bone loss or damage. Use of the bridge will actually contribute to the health of your jaw.
A perfect fit
With both crowns and bridges, we make impressions of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit for you. We also carefully match your teeth color.
We carefully check the fit of bridges, first by using a temporary bridge, and then adjusting the framework and bite of your permanent bridge. Getting a crown or a bridge typically involves about two visits with us.
