Overcoming your fear of the dentist
Is fear causing you to put off visiting the dentist?
Missed or postponed dental visits can then lead to larger dental problems. In fact, toothaches are among the top 10 reasons for Emergency Department visits — a situation that most of us would rather avoid!
The Whitmore Dental team is committed to helping our patients overcome dental fear and begin the journey to better dental health.
If you feel anxious about dental care, we want you to tell us. Just talking about your specific worries and concerns can help.
Unlike the folks on reality TV shows, we don’t judge!
Our job is to listen to you, so we can provide the very best care for your unique situation and health. Well gain a deep understanding about how to provide the most positive treatment experience for you.
We’ll work with you to ensure that every part of your visit, exam and dental care is comfortable. If you feel any stress, we encourage you to communicate with us about it.
Dental pain management has advanced a great deal since the dental visits of our childhoods. Dr. Marc Whitmore is highly trained and experienced in administering different levels of sedation medication to support our patients’ needs.
Options include local anesthetics that block any pain during procedures; Nitrous Oxide, which makes you feel more relaxed during your visit; and different levels of sedation dentistry, ranging from treatment that makes you feel somewhat sleepy to full sedation care.
The Whitmore Dental team cares about the details that help you feel at ease. For example, bringing your iPod can help if you dislike the sound of dental equipment. Or use one of our headsets, and select from our music library!
Worried about communicating with us during your exam or dental procedures? We’ll talk with you beforehand to establish an easy hand signal that you can use.
During care, our team members also keep a close watch on our patients’ faces and body language.
Our patients have different preferences about the amount of communication we provide. If you want to know each thing that your doctor or hygienist will do, we’ll communicate with you throughout your visit.
Some patients prefer to not to know so many details, because it makes them anxious. For those patients, we create a quiet atmosphere.
Your comfort is our top priority, and you’ll see that in our approach.
We’ll be in touch with you after major procedures to see how you are doing, and we’ll also remind you when it is time for follow up appointments and regular dental care.
As you become more comfortable visiting the dentist, you may find that you look forward to your appointments, and you’ll be enjoying the benefits of healthier teeth and a terrific smile!
