Having one or more missing teeth can cause you to be self-conscious about how you look, but it will also cause problems with eating and possibly speaking. If the tooth has been missing for a long time, the other teeth may shift to fill in the hole. This is why it is important to see Dr. Whitmore as soon as you can if you are missing teeth.
The best solution for a missing tooth is dental implants. This replaces both the missing root and tooth, and is a permanent replacement. The implant itself is really the root replacement, which is topped with a dental crown. The root portion of the dental implant is made of titanium, which is biocompatible to your bone and tissue.
Although the dental implant procedure is surgical in nature, there is no reason to be intimidated. Dr. Whitmore and his staff have your care and comfort first in their thoughts, and can answer any and all questions you may have. Contact Whitmore Dental in Plano, Texas to schedule a dental implant consult.
Dental Implant Procedure
Getting a dental implant is a three-stage procedure. The first step is implanting a titanium screw within your jawbone. This requires burying the implant within the gum line, where it will begin to fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration.
Once your implant has been successfully placed within your jawbone and has started to heal, the next step requires inserting an abutment, or post, just above the gumline on top of the implant. This will allow Dr. Whitmore to attach a dental crown. The post and implant will continue the process of osseointegration, which can take many weeks. Sometimes the implant and post can be placed at the same time, which can make a three-stage procedure a two-stage.
Finally, once the implant and post have healed and fused, Dr. Whitmore will place a dental crown over the post. This final stage means giving you back your bite and smile. Your dental crown is fabricated to match your other teeth, so that it will be very difficult for anyone to see that you have replaced a missing tooth.
